IT

As the Systems Support Officer for Salisbury Library Service I'm the first point of contact for library staff experiencing problems with hardware, such as label printers, and software, such as problems with a patron's PC reservation booking. I work with council IT in troubleshooting networking problems and performing upgrades on public PC disc images. I also work with IT to install new software or functionality such as our recent addition of LibraryThing tags to our OPACS. I liase with the PLS help desk and Editure to identify problems with public internet access. I also assist patrons in the use of public pcs, mostly with printing problems. I work with vendors such as Paytec, 3M, Envisionware, Comware to install, troubleshoot and upgrade library software and hardware such as our express terminal checkout units or our PaperCut print charging system.
I also work with other teams to configure the Horizon library automation to reflect library policies. For instance, at the moment I'm creating item and collection types to define circulation parameters for a new collection, Blu-Ray video discs. I'm familiar with Horizon's cataloging, circulation modules and administration modules. I'm responsible for generating statistics using Ad hoc reports and table editor, assigning staff privileges, and creating borrower types, collection types, item stat types, and item types. I've also done some editing of MARC records.
I'm familiar with and have undertaken training in the P2 bibliographic utility and am responsible for selecting materials in the 000-099.999 dewey range. I've also undertaken training in the Bibliostats statistical reporting software.
I'm a member of SACODA, the Horizon user group, and the PLS Library IT Group.
I've installed Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express on my home network so I can understand how it works and learn SQL.

Training and Presentations

As a library officer I ran introductory internet and email training for patrons. As well as maintaining software I create procedures, hint sheets and train staff in the use of software. For example, after configuring Evanced Events Calendar I ran training sessions on how to how to make bookings and created quick cheat sheets with screen shots for use on the circulation desk.

I also created a web based introduction to Web 2.0 for library staff. For these tutorials I created a blog and forum to assist staff undertaking the training. I presented an overview of the training at a PLS quarterly. This was well received and I was invited to repeat the presentation at the Berri Library and the Glossop Primary School Library for librarians and teachers in the Riverland. You can see an overview of the training on the Salisbury Library Blog (please wait a moment for the blog to load the embedded presentations, this could take a minute): http://www.salisburylibrary.blogspot.com/
At PLS in Hindmarsh I ran a one day workshop for librarians based on the Salisbury Web 2.0 training. I've also presented talks on Web 2.0 technologies to the divisional heads of the Salisbury Community Services Department, departmental staff seminars on innovation, and to teachers and librarians at the Northern Adelaide Libraries for Learning Partnership.

I've also created a wiki for the Salisbury Friends of the Library Group:
http://www.friendsbooks.org.au
This site was created to give the Friends and library staff an opportunity to experiment with Web 2.0 technologies.
I greatly enjoy sharing knowledge, participating in training and welcome opportunities to collaborate with other library professionals. I think collaboration between staff both within a particular library service and between library services is both personally rewarding and can help us reduce reduplication of effort.
